The English language is a mess. There is no reason for it to remain so. As a first step we should change to phonetic spelling. Since current phonetics are needlessly convoluted, the following is a suggestion for such a system - made as simple and as close to current usage as seems possible.

ch = cha (change) th = tha (the) or th (math) cw = cwa (quick) A big problem will be accents. Possibly a “standard media” type version of English 2001 should be used with dictionaries showing widely used alternates. Drop the vowels on the ending of words where they are obvious - caachr, daznt, and in short words that are obvious - wz (waz), mch (mach). Vowels in suffixes are retained if needed to clarify a separate syllable - forest not forst., or to prevent double consonants - fundad not fundd. Leave out the apostrophes in contractions - caant, didnt. Possibly there should be standard spellings for words that are pronounced differently in different circumstances - pahlatics, pahliticl (instead of paliticl).
